A further K1 500 000 was used to purchase sets of uniforms for the two teams while referees were paid K322 000.

The match fetched K7 491 700 gate revenue and K1.2 million from broadcasting rights, leaving FAM with a net revenue of K8 691 700.

FAM said the Charity Shield had served its purpose.

The statement reads: “Apart from the revenue raised, football, through NBS Bank Charity Shield, has helped to raise awareness of the devastating effects of Cyclone Ana and that more needs to be done to ensure that the flood victims are adequately supported.”

FAM commercial and marketing director Limbani Matola said revenue from the match will be used to purchase houshold items to be donated to Tropical Cyclone Ana survivors in Chikwawa and Nsanje districts.

He said: “We would like to thank NBS Bank, the two clubs and all the fans that patronised the match.

“Your support made the NBS Bank Charity Shield a success so that we can help our brothers and sisters who have been affected by the floods.”

NBS Bank plc chief executive officer Kwanele Ngwenya also expressed satisfaction with the outcome of the Charity Shield sponsorship.

He said: “The turn out was good considering the Covid-19 restrictions [on fans]. We didnt expect a full stadium.”

President Lazarus Chakwera declared a Stae of National Disaster in areas hit by Cyclone Ana, which killed at least 46 people in the country and appealed for urgent assistance for an estimated 1 083 522 families left homeless by the storm’s heavy floods.

This declaration followed a preliminary assessment by the Department of Disaster Management Affairs (Dodma) indicated that Chikwawa, Nsanje, Mulanje and Phalombe, were the hardest hit.

In response to the calls, FAM decided to use the Charity Shield which was introduced in 2016.

The 2019 edition of Charity Shield, sponsored by EcoBank, was used to raise awareness against atrocities targeting people with albinism.

The tournament was halted in 2020 and 2021 due to rising cases of the Covid-19.

Bullets Silver 1-0 during the event.

This means the TNM Super League defending champions have won all the editions since 2016.
